Let's face it... supplements aren't cheap, and just like anything else in this world you get what you pay for. Avoid these mistakes when shopping for a new supplement or apply this to your current stack and make sure your getting the most out of your dollar. #1: Giving up on a supplement because it didn't deliver fast results. Most supplements need to be taken for a fairly long time with you putting in the proper work ethic to see results. You can't take a couple of pills and expect to be shredded in a week. Their called supplements because they are meant to be supplemented into your diet and workout regiment. You wouldn't eat one salad and go for a 15 minute jog and expect to loose 40 pounds right off the bat? Truth is..that supplements take time to work and will work if used properly with a decent diet and reasonable workout regiment. How To Avoid: If you buy a new supplement give it at least 1-2 months before giving up on it. Especially weight loss supplements can take this long before you start seeing results. Also if your not seeing the results you want, try analyzing yourself before the supplement. Think about what you can do better. Most of the time it's not the supplement that needs changing...it's your diet or workouts. All in all the supplements themselves aren't going to make or break you, though they can give you a distinct edge. #2: Not cycling properly. Some supplements won't work as well if you take them over long periods of time. We've all seen those guys at the gym that pile up multiple scoops of C4 in a shaker cup before hitting there workout even though the serving size is 1-2 scoops. This is because they've built up a tolerance to the active ingredients in that particular supplement. It's not going to work better by taking more than the recommended serving. Their body just needs more of it to feel the same effects they did when they first began taking the supplement. How To Avoid: Read the directions on the label of every supplement you take. Follow the dosage and dosage times religiously. The supplement is going to be most effective being taken how it was designed to be taken. When reading the directions stay alert for information on cycling. #3 Supplements instead of meals. Supplements like protein shakes and super food greens are great for filling in the gap in your nutrition plan. You must draw a line as well. Getting your protein from your food will always be better than a whey protein shake hands down. Yes, protein and super greens shakes are convenient and do have there place in fitness but should not be our go to source for that nutrition. That fact of the matter is protein powder simple can't match the benefits of whole food. How to avoid: Make sure your getting at least three meals everyday that are rich in protein and whole foods. Focus on getting whole food in you rather than your next protein shake. #4: Listening to the hype. It is fact that supplements and certain ingredients have different effects on people. This means just because a supplement is popular or works great for your friend doesn't mean it'll do the same for you. The most popular brand of supplements is not always the best. It all comes down to what you are looking for in a product and making the best choice for you. How to avoid: Do your research on products and ingredients to learn exactly what you need to reach your fitness goals. Check labels of products for the key ingredients you decided on. One product that's popular might have minuscule amounts of the actual ingredients your looking for when a cheaper brand might have higher dosages of those same key ingredients. #5: Not timing your supplements right. Certain supplements have certain times when they should be taken. For example whey protein is fast absorbing so it should be taken right after a workout. On the other hand casein protein is slow digesting protein so it's best to be taken before bed or whenever you go a long period of time without any food intake. Not timing your supplement intake correctly can drastically change the effectiveness. Like I mentioned earlier supplements are most effective when taken how they were designed to be taken and timing is no exception. How to avoid: Simply just follow the directions on the label. If the directions aren't specific enough, research the product or ingredients for the best time to take it to reach your goal. Now that you've read some common mistakes when using supplements I hope you have the knowledge and confidence to make a more educated choice when purchasing, trying, or using any supplement.
